Beebe Medical Center heard allegations about Dr. Earl Bradley 14 years ago The News Journal

“There are those who were turned off by his appearance,” Hudson said. “But there are those who thought he was a wonderful physician, including physicians on staff. They took their own children to him.”

Dr. James E. Spellman Jr., a surgical oncologist, took his four children to Bradley. Spellman said he considered Bradley a “misfit” for the way he looked and for adorning his office complex with an outdoor Ferris wheel and a Pinocchio exam room.

Spellman trusted Bradley’s medical skills and said the doctor was never alone with his children.

“We thought he was a little eccentric,” Spellman said about himself and his colleagues. “But none of us had a clue. I talked to him all the time. I’d see him at the hospital making rounds. And anytime I needed him for advice, I could just call him on the phone. He was a strange guy, introverted, but as far as I could tell he was just taking care of business.”

Dr. John E. Spieker, an orthopedic surgeon, said he sometimes saw Bradley working late at night. “There’s guys that hate going in at 2 in the morning, but I’d never hear Bradley complaining,” Spieker said. Hospital officials asked prosecutors for more information but “before any records were turned over, the matter was dropped,” Beebe officials have said. Police wanted to charge Bradley with misdemeanor offensive touching, but prosecutors decided they could not win the case and, in October 2005, Milford police told Beebe the case was closed without revealing any details of its investigation.
