Okla. governor vetoes bill outlining insurance's role in abortions IFAwebnews.com

Gov. Brad Henry announced he would veto HB 3284, a measure putting new limits on when private health insurance companies can cover the procedure. Presented by Republican state legislators, the bill’s goal was to block the exchanges, scheduled for 2014 under new health reform law, or outside regional exchanges, operating in the state, from covering the procedures.

Two states – Tennessee and Arizona – have already passed similar laws banning abortion coverage through the new health insurance exchanges.

In a statement, Henry said the measure “has numerous flaws” that “would ultimately result in another expensive and possibly futile legal battle” for Oklahoma.

Henry objected primarily to a measure in the bill forcing women, including victims of rape and incest, to participate in what he called “an intimate and detailed” questionnaire about their pregnancy and personal life in order to gain insurance coverage.

The answers to that questionnaire were to be made public through a state website.
