Wisconsin health insurance exchanges in the works FOX 21 Online
MADISON (WPR) Those crafting the new markets for health insurance called "exchanges" say they should provide a consumer friendly shopping experience.
A Wisconsin health official says they're trying to keep a very complex mechanism to buy health care simple.
One frequently suggested comparison for the future exchanges is Travelocity.com, known for its convenience and relative ease. Rick Curtis of the nonpartisan Institute for Health Policy Solutions. He says the exchanges should be understandable to consumers. Curtis says too much choice overwhelms consumers, “and it almost precludes informed choice.”
Wisconsin's Medicaid director Jason Helgerson insists simplicity can be achieved.
“Medicaid is extremely complicated, and yet people are applying for the program through a straightforward web tool,” he says.
Currently Wisconsin is using Medicaid dollars to help fund health insurance for people above the 133-percent poverty level required under national health reform. Those who don't qualify for Badgercare will be able to use the health exchange where premiums are tied to percentage of income.
