With its employee health insurance policy running out and new quotes only recently received, Van Wert City Council members felt they had no choice but to accept a new plan that will cost the city an additional $103,976 annually.
Finance Committee Chairman Dick Shultz reported that of the three insurers asked to submit proposals, only two did so with the most expensive plan being an 18 percent increase over last year. The plan from Medical Mutual was 9.9 percent higher and was approved by a unanimous vote.
How to handle the increased expense was discussed, but the only item agreed to was that city workers would not be picking up any additional costs for the plan at this time. Safety-Service Director Jay Fleming explained that city workers just recently had their contributions for insurance doubled and did not feel it was right
