I agree with finneganG above, but don’t blame lack of competition. The medical and dental industry, at least in primary care, does not benefit from the cost savings other industries enjoy from mass production and other economies of scale. You still have to treat patients one at a time and speak with them.
Because of that limitation, the medical and dental industry is also vulnerable to increases in the cost of labor and real estate. When real estate bubbled up, it made labor much more expensive as well as direct property costs. Supply companies also profiteer greatly because the presumption is that practitioners have no choice but pass the cost through and take the heat for them as they mark up supply costs at whim.
In this new world of increasing income inequality, there is only one solution to expand affordability to the majority. Government must take steps to reverse the trend toward increasing income inequality, either that or it will have to subsidize health care. Without such measures, health and dental care will be denied to increasing numbers of people as income inequality puts more and more people out of the reach of care.
